Balayage & Highlights

Are We The Best Balayage Hairdressers In Hertford? We Think You'll Say 'Yes'!

Balayage is the trend that changed the face of hair colour forever. Now women can achieve that "just back from holiday" sun-kissed look, without leaving their hometown! At Hertford Hair Salon in Hertford, we are the experts in creating beautiful balayage hair colour.

But what exactly is balayage?  Balayage is a French word meaning 'to sweep' or 'to paint' and allows your highly trained colour technician to paint hair precisely where it's needed for a gorgeous sun-kissed effect. This technique allows for natural-looking highlights with the hair usually growing lighter near the ends and softer on top.

Why Is Balayage So Popular?

Balayage is incredibly popular because it not only creates a natural look but it's also fairly low maintenance.  With traditional foil highlights you tend to get a more noticeable regrowth line (although this clearly depends on the colour you choose).

Looking for the best hairdressers in Hertford? Our hair colour experts will work with your skin tones, haircut and natural hair growth patterns to create a bespoke balayage hair colour. Because the colour is painted on by hand, your Hertford Hair colourist can choose the placements to best complement your features and tones whilst looking utterly natural - unless, of course, you opt for a bright fashion colour balayage!

What Is The Difference Between Balayage, Ombré & Sombré?

Balayage is a highlighting technique which is usually beautifully blended and grows lighter towards the ends of the hair.  You may also hear it go by the name of root stretching or colour melting which are all slightly different versions of balayage.

Ombré is a more bold hair colour technique where you can usually see the difference between the colours used as it graduates from darker roots to lighter ends. The two are often confused, which is why it is so important to have an in-depth colour consultation with one of our balayage experts so we can help to decide which colour technique is the best for you.

Sombré (soft ombré) is a much more subtle version of ombré. The appearance of dark roots is less harsh and the colour is seamlessly melted together. Sombré goes beyond balayage and works with more shades and tones throughout the hair to add dimension and texture.

What Are Babylights and Highlights?

As already mentioned, balayage creates a sun-kissed look with colours hand-painted throughout your hair to produce less noticeable regrowth lines.

You are probably already familiar with highlights where lots of strands of hair are coloured in a uniform pattern usually across the whole of the head, but we can also do half head highlights, quarter head highlights or add a few well-placed highlights wherever you want them.

When it comes to babylights, we also use the traditional highlighting process but pick up very tiny sections of hair to give an incredibly subtle highlight. Babylights are very delicate, usually white blonde highlights, that are often added around the hairline to mimic the soft hair colour on younger children.

Foilayage

Foilayage colour is where traditional foil highlights are added along side a beautiful balayage hair colour to get a bright, fresh look.

Foilayage highlights are normally weaved very finely and can even be hand painted directly onto the hair to give multi-dimensional colour. Your root colour isn't coloured meaning a more natural look.

How Do I Prepare For a Balayage Hair Appointment?

At Hertford Hair Salon in Hertford, we believe that your hair colour consultation is a vital part of the balayage process.

Book a complimentary consultation with your colourist at least 48 hours before your appointment so that they can give you a quick skin allergy test and discuss the process, assess your hair and talk about your likes, dislikes and hair colour inspirations.

If possible, bring some balayage photos you love to your consultation so that we can discuss how to make it work for you. Your Hertford Hair colourist will assess your skin tone to find the colour that works perfectly for you.

The length of your balayage appointment depends on the style and depth of the highlights, your hair type and how much hair you have. Your Hertford Hair colour specialist will be able to give you an estimate of how long your appointment will take at your consultation.
